DESIGN PROCESS

5 Stages of Our Design Process

Stage 1 – Preliminary Design

A site visit to learn about your new property or existing home is the first step. Each project has its own unique characteristics. I study these features and research site restrictions to determine how they will affect your design.

Client Collaboration

I ask a lot of questions to begin to form your “project wish list.” Are you looking to add on or will this be a new home? Do you need guest quarters? Do you like an open floor plan? Do you have a preference for style of the home? Does the house have any sentimental qualities you’d like to save? Some clients need help fine-tuning their project, others require me to help create and formulate the scope of the design project.
Prior to starting any project, I always recommend you spend time at the site. Get to know the prevailing breezes, where the sun rises and sets, even your new neighbors. The house and the lot will give you clues to its special features.

Stage 2 – Design Development

Putting your inspiration on paper is next in the design process. I produce sketches of organized floor plans and 3-D sketches of your project. We meet to review and brainstorm ideas.

Your Input is Essential.

If you have a particular style or vision for the home, share with me your binder of idea clippings, photos of details you like, or web references as we work through the details of the design.

Drawing Up Your “Wish-List”

The design process is a combination of your wants and needs for the home, site and building code restrictions and your budget. I creatively balance these items to find the best solution for your project.

Home Renderings

Hand drawn plans and sketches like these are an integral part of my design process for your project. I can help you visualize your ideas with a series of sketches tailored to you and your project site.

Stage 3 – Working Drawings

Sketches become hard-lined detailed drawings in this stage. Room by room, floor by floor, I develop details and produce the drawings that will make your home a reality. We work through dimensions, material selections, window and door selection, trim and cabinetry, as well as plan for systems that will make the house comfortable.

Coastal Permitting

Permitting can be a daunting task at this stage in the design process. I can assist you through Town and State agency permitting requirements to prepare your project for the next phase – construction!

Choosing a Builder

Careful consideration is important in selecting a builder for your home. Thirty years of experience working with different local builders has taught me that the construction phase is a great collaboration between the builder, the architect and the client, and communication is key to success. I can help you find the builder who is the best fit for your project.

Stage 4 – Construction Observation

Construction of the design project is the most exciting phase! My site visits to preview construction and to answer questions help the building process move along consistently towards the goal of a completed project. I am always available for on-site conferences with you and the builder to problem-solve issues and walk-through interpretation of details.

Stage 5 – Welcome Home

Beyond the Build

As you settle into your home, features or details may become apparent in new ways. Call me with any questions or comments. I am always happy to revisit a client and their project, or to come by to discuss the next one!

Completed Homes

After working with homeowners throughout Southern Rhode Island, and with the talented builders that take my drawings to the next stage of reality, it is a truly rewarding experience to share these photos of completed projects.
